CHIANG MAI FAREWELL

Chiang Mai lies below us
partly obscured by the humid air.
A white elephant has brought us to this place,
although it found its way here
centuries ago
and we came only today.

We have rung seven bells
to ensure long lives and prosperity.

We have found Buddha
in all his poses.

At the temple, people are quiet,
pious and respectful.
Young girls in traditional costumes
perform the cup dance.
Gold shines everywhere.

We are near the end of our journey.
Here, as close as we can get to heaven,
we whisper our prayers for those long gone
and we say goodby.
