MOTHER'S DAY IN FRESNO

They move with slow, deliberate grace,
eyes downcast, thoughtful,
jointed to their past and their heritage
through movement and music.
The maestro connects to the dancers
through his guitar.
The story unfolds around and through them.

These are the women of the Mexican Revolution.
They are the women of transition.
They are Americans.

These beautiful Chicanas
bring the past, present and future together
in their performance
and wrap it in their rebozos,
that all-purpose shawl that traces its history
to before the birth of Mexico,
and in to which so much
love, hope, sacrifice and security are interwoven.
Here in the San Joaquin Valley
Mother's Day has arrived.
